“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” – Luke 19:10
Chris Russo didn’t grow up chasing God—he chased acceptance. Raised in West Hartford, Connecticut, his childhood was shaken when his mother passed away from cancer. His dad did the best he could, but without a steady anchor, Chris’s teenage years drifted into places far from faith.
Everywhere he turned, he looked for a sense of belonging—in unhealthy relationships, in drugs, in friends who seemed “cool.” But no matter what he tried, the emptiness stayed. It was a hollow ache that no amount of distraction could quiet.
During his freshman year of college, something began to stir. Slowly, the walls around his heart started to crack. And then came December 12, 2000—the night everything changed.
That evening, Chris fell into the most vivid dream of his life. He saw himself as a dark soul, falling into a deep, shadowy chasm. Ahead of him was a radiant expanse of light, filled with beautiful, glowing faces moving upward. Among them, he recognized one—his roommate, Ashwin Patel.
When Chris woke up, the meaning hit him instantly. Ashwin was headed to heaven. Chris wasn’t. Without hesitation, he walked into Ashwin’s room and admitted, “I know I’m not right with God.”
Ashwin led him in a prayer to receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Chris described the moment as being filled with the presence and power of God. Ashwin looked at him and said, “Dude, you’re glowing.” Then he handed Chris his Bible.
As Chris began to read, the words leapt off the page—they weren’t just ink anymore, they were alive.
The next morning, Chris woke up knowing his life would never be the same. The road ahead was uncertain, but the destination was no longer in question. He had been rescued from the chasm and set on the path toward the light.
Conclusion
Chris’s story is a reminder that God can meet us anywhere—even in the middle of the night, even in a dream. Sometimes, all it takes is one moment of clarity to change the entire course of a life.

Chris’s experience reminded me of the testimonies in Imagine Heaven (have you read it?!?)—those glimpses of light, presence, and eternity. It’s amazing to see how God uses moments like this to change a life. I’m glad I recently stumbled on your Substack. Thank you both for sharing!
